Private Eye magazine reported in issue 1349 (26 September 2013) that Chris Yarsley, the EU affairs manager for the Freight Transport Association (FTA), stated that he had “been asked by the DfT to represent them at various stakeholder meetings due to the cutbacks in London!”
On 10 October 2013, the Rt.Hon. Patrick McLoughlin, the Secretary of State for Transport contradicted that assertion when he stated in a letter,
“I can assure you that the FTA has not attended any EU meetings relating to road safety or cycling issues on behalf of the Department or the UK Government.”
A request for clarification was sent to the Freight Transport Association but it has not yet been replied to.
